The C major scale

After becoming so fond of the white notes, we are now ready to take a closer look at our first scale:

The C major scale setup

The following setup is produced:

The scale consists of seven different notes; the eight is the same as the first. There is a half tone step between the 3rd and 4th note and between the 7th and 8th note. The other note intervals are all whole tone steps.

With the C major scale the half tone steps are between E and F, and H and C.

We now already know quite a lot, if you consider that this is the basis of our entire  tonal system. Or the basis of the tonal system of the Occident at least, as we know it and are also used to hearing it. Asian or Arabic tonal systems are very difficult for our ears to grasp, because they have totally different tone steps, e.g. quarter tone steps, etc.

And so we come to the end of this chapter! Lean back and simply review it all again. Don't be discouraged if everything isn't clear straight away – I myself didn't understand everything the first time.
